TRANSFER: Garner extends stay

15 October 2012

Striker to stay for further month

Watford striker Joe Garner has extended his stay at Brunton Park for a further month following an enjoyable four-week spell in Cumbria with the Blues.

Garner, 24, returned to Brunton Park for the second time of asking midway through September and has scored one goal in his five appearances so far.

"The good thing about this one is that Joe was keen to stay and we were keen to keep him here," manager Greg Abbott said.

"He's already shown us that he can be a real thorn in the side and that he's difficult to handle. He hasn't had regular pitch time for a good while and we think he will get better and better as he gets more games under his belt.

"He's a really hard worker and he has come to is with an excellent attitude and a desire to play the game. Hopefully he'll continue to improve and, if he does, we think he'll be doing a real job for us."

Blackburn-born Garner first joined the Cumbrians from his home town club on a half-season loan deal in January 2007 and made the move permanent when he chose Carlisle ahead of Dundee just before the start of the 2007/08 campaign.

He grabbed 19 goals in his 53 appearances and attracted attention from higher up the ladder, and he made a big money move to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2008 where he signed a four-year contract.

First team chances were limited at the City Ground and he had loan spells with Huddersfield and Scunthorpe before he joined Watford for an undisclosed fee in August last year.

He scored his first goal on his return to United in the 2-1 away victory at Walsall ten days ago.

"I'm enjoying it here and I'm pleased that we've been able to sort this out," he said. "When we're on our game we play some really good stuff and it's fantastic for me to be involved.

"I still don't feel that I'm at my best yet and hopefully that will come soon. This is a good group of lads and I want to do my bit to help us to push on as much as I can."

Garner will stay with United until midnight on Tuesday 20 November (after the Doncaster Rovers home game) and has been given permission to play in our FA Cup fixtures.
