This morning, we spoke to Jon Mellish ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One encounter with Cambridge United.
“[I’m] Excited for it to be honest, I think last week we can take a lot of positives from it.
“Obviously I'm gutted about the game being off on Tuesday, but it’s given us a bit more time to be ready for this one.
“It’s a big game and it’s definitely a team we can beat.
“We just want to get going again, play a lot more football like we did against Portsmouth, be brave, get on the ball and show the fans that we’re still fighting.
“It was a lot more front foot [last week], we were brave on the ball, got forward and attacked them a lot more, more so in the first-half than the second, so if we can put in a full 90 minute display like that I’m sure we can come out with a good result.”
On Tuesday evening, the late call was made to postpone our game against Burton Albion, speaking on that night, he said: “When I first saw the pitch, I said that’s playable and we can give it a go, but when you saw the covers come off it was terrible and it was the right call in the end [to postpone the game].
“Preparations [for this weekend] have been good, it’s been a bit of a dodgy week obviously but that’s part of it and we’ve got to remain professional."
Whilst our fixture was called off, Cambridge were still in action on Tuesday as they fell to a 3-1 on the road against Portsmouth.
When asked if that could play to our advantage, Mellish added: “You could say so, but when it comes down to the games and you’re locked in and ready to go, I don’t think it makes too much difference but hopefully the more the game goes on our legs [being fresher] can count."
Throughout his time at the Club, Mellish has become an integral member of the squad being able to feature in several positions, when required.
“I’m enjoying it to be honest, just as long as I’m playing that’s the main thing, no one wants to be on the bench, so wherever the gaffer wants me to play I’ll do a job, whether that’s in defence, midfield and if he wants me to go striker again I’ll do that as well.
“As long as I’m playing I’m happy and I just want to do the best I can for the team.
“It’s important for every team to have that sort of player and I’m kind of that one at the minute and like I say, if that’s what the gaffer wants I’ll do it for him."
Ahead of another vital game at Brunton Park, Jon had the following message for our supporters: “Just stick with us. It’s hard at the minute and we’re not where we want to be but there’s still plenty [of] games left. If we can get on a run of wins, who knows what could happen, staying up could be as good as Wembley.”
